Once procrastination is overcome we can deal with things we want to change. Most people live in denial about their bad habits. They either ignore them, because they think it is too much effort to change or they consider themselves not as bad as other people and get satisfied with the bad things in their lives. Very popular is to blame someone else, so one doesn’t have to take responsibility for the bad behavior.
God calls everything that hurts us: SIN. In God’s eyes there is no difference between a small sin or a big bad sin. God is holy= perfect. Everything that is not perfect is missing the mark of His perfection.. We, who live in this winding down world of death and decay, can never obtain perfection and become totally sinless. However we can strife for a happy life and to do that we have to eliminate hurt (sin).
We do well to contemplate WHERE our hurts come in and as we recognize them we can abolish them. God says: If we submit to God and resist the devil, he will have to flee. James 4:7. That means we CAN have victory in our lives
Detecting WHAT is hurting us is the first step. No, don’t blame the hurt on the next person, because you cannot change that person, but you can change yourself with God’s help. Believe me, you can be convinced God is on your side, because He hates it when we, the people He loves, hurt. With God on your side you CAN overcome. All you have to do is to delight yourself in the Lord (Psalm 37:4). Seek first the kingdom of God and all good things will be added to you kind of automatically (Matthew 6:33).
That is why the
1. step to a solution is to pray.
2. specify the bad habit
3. observe when you do it.
4. be goal focused, not habit focused. Also don’t beat yourself up when you fail. Acknowledge failure and move on.
5. Nip it in the butt from one second to the next. Don’t baby or pacify the habit any longer. You are done with it- period. No crying over spilled milk.
6. Again: pray every time the urge gets strong to do whatever it was.
7. Reorient yourself with something positive to take your mind of the bad habit.
Before you know it your bad habit is replaced with something pleasurable.
